Day 473: The Spotted Frog

It's been open for months, but since I don't live out in Farragut, I had not made it to Turkey Creek's newest treasure, The Spotted Frog. I stopped in today and was delighted. I thought it was more of a gift shop, and they do have great gifts and jewelry and cute little things for the home. But, there are lots of clothes...and shoes...and more clothes. All at a great price point. Everything was a little fun, not generic. But still very wearable. I'll definately be back to check it out again!


And I might go back for a pair of boots like this. Or the version in Go Vols Big Orange!!

Day 204: Panera in Turkey Creek

As my time with Rice Bowls comes to a close and as we look forward to moving to the Bearden area, this is one of my final (or perhaps the final) mornings I will sit at Panera in Turkey Creek. Sure, it is a chain. Sure I had many a Panera trip while in SC. But, every Tuesday and Thursday morning, as I needed to get to work before the Provision Office opened, Panera has been there for me with sweet hazelnut coffee, cinnamon crunch bagels, or an egg and cheese sandwich. Delight.

Here are a few of things I have learned sitting here...
* Gossip hurts. Especially church gossip. As I have overheard a groups talking, I have felt their hurt and the hurt they afflict on each other as nit bit bulletins or church staff or even the person right across the table.
* No matter how many times you visit, a chain with 40 tables will never treat you with the same sense of being a regular as a local shop like Broadway Bagels with 15 tables and Mary and Janet's smiling faces of ownership behind the counter. Maybe it's a big town/small town thing. But it's okay. Things just change.
* Sometimes, as I type on the computer, I think how little I have in common with orphanage partners or Rice Bowls staff in other countries. Then, I am reminded that we have so, so much in common - as passion to love the Lord and a heart for others. That perspective on the world is so, so unifying.
* All I have to do is what I am called to do. Not the biggest thing, the most imporatn thing, or even the thing that others want. What is most imporant is the life, people, places, and all the Lord has called me to.
* If you see someone you know, say hello. Especially if it is Leslie and she is picking up 30 dozen bagels and taking them all out to her car like a parade of bread.
Praying big matters.
* If a man with an accent keeps trying to buy your car every time you see him...pick up your laptop and move to the other side of the restaurant.
* Giving out your business card is always a good idea.
* Everyone, everyone, everyone you see is made in the image of God. If I remember that (thank you Bret Allen) is will radically change the way I look at the world, treat people, and relate to the Lord.

So, I am sure I'll be back from time to time. But here's to being a regular at Panera in Turkey Creek! It's been grand!

Day 188: Francesca's

Monday, to welcome in the summer weather, I sported some new flip flops from a favorite store, Francesca's Collection. It's located in Turkey Creek, run by my high school classmate and former co-cheerleader Mary, and I got them with a gift card. It's a perfect place for a cute gift (I've given 3 birthday presents from there), a fun accessory, or a new purse. They've also got clothes. My shoes are not featured on their website, but above are pick of a few of my favorite things!

Day 172: Farragut High School Drama

They aren't the "Invisiple Players" anymore, but the Drama Department at Farragut High School, now under the direction of Zach Best, is still producing amazing work. As an alumn of the drama department, it is exciting to see the tradition continue.

Farragut High School will present “Oliver!” a musical retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic novel “Oliver Twist,” March 18-21.

“Oliver!” features one of FHS’ largest musical casts and a full student orchestra, and was jointly directed by FHS drama director Zachary Best and choral director Kenton Deitch.

“Altogether, it’s almost 70 students participating,” Best said, including the student musical and acting cast, orchestra and backstage operators.

“It’s extracurricular, so the whole school is invited to audition or participate,” Best said.

The musical cast includes Will Stone as Fagin, Garrison Stallings and Molly Morgan as Oliver, Paul Gary as the Artful Dodger and Robert Wrinkle as Bill Sykes.

“Oliver!” follows the title character of the same name, an orphan, as he escapes abusive caretakers and joins a gang of pickpockets, led by Fagin.

Oliver “is arrested for pick-pocketing … and the gang becomes concerned that Oliver may reveal their location.

“So they set out to recapture Oliver into the pick-pocketing gang, and eventually, his long-lost grandfather finds him,” Best said.

Sophomore Garrison Stallings said he enjoyed the musical aspect of his character more than the acting.

“My favorite thing would probably be the musical numbers, mainly because I’m a singer, not really an actor that much.

“[The songs] have really worked my falsetto range, because I sing tenor in my choir, but this is the part of an 11-year-old boy, so I get to sing soprano,” Stallings said.

Calls to Molly Morgan, who also plays Oliver, were not returned by press deadline.

“Oliver!” is an adaptation of Dickens’ classic novel, with music and lyrics by Lionel Bart. That includes such well-known songs as “You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two,” “Consider Yourself” and “Oom-Pah-Pah.”

“I would say ‘Food, Glorious Food’ would probably be one of the most recognizable songs, and then ‘Oliver,’” Deitch said.

Deitch said there are six lead solos in the musical, but most of the songs are group-led.

The musical debuted in London in 1960 and was later made into a film, which won six Academy Awards.

During the show’s four days of production, FHS will collect school supplies for Holston Home for Children’s Beacon School in Greeneville, Tenn.

Anyone who brings school supplies to a showing will receive a free popcorn.

It was the first cold Friday night of the season. There is nothing like a little high school football to kick off the weekend. I haven’t been to a game at Farragut since I graduated, but there will always be something so special about cheering on your alma mater. Sure, several things have changed, and it was weird to not being watching the Dorman Cavaliers with my Young Life girls. But, so, so fun to rediscover – Go Admirals!

Day 12: Pimento's

My search for new favorite breakfast locations brought me to Pimento's this morning. This Memphis based company has 5 or 6 cafes around Tennessee, with 2 in Knoxville. It has already become one of my favorites lunch in Turkey Creek, catering they sponsored at the Junior League meeting, and their take home Pimento Cheese. This morning's coffee was great and so is the free wifi. It's 8am and I am ready for lunch!

Day 10: Elle Boutique

After 3 Days in Atlanta for the Catalyst Conference, I am excited to be back in my new hometown. What better way to recover than checking out a new shop. I made my first visit to Elle. Who knew Turkey Creek had such great boutique shopping. Cute and helpful sales staff. Precious clothes. Great jewelry. Toms shoes. Fabulous. I was in the market for some new jeans and got my first pair for Paiges. They might be my new favorite and I’ll definitely be back to Elle.

Day 2: Farragut

A year ago, I never would have guessed I would move to East Tennessee. Even more surprising to me, have moved back to the town of Farragut. Located just west of Knoxville, Farragut has been my family's home since 1992. Now, I am living there again. In addition to it's proximity to my family, my boyfriend Brad, and my roommate Kristin, I am already excited about all the Greenways and Parks. I am lucky to be living in a cute "guesthouse" on some property that is tucked away amidst trees and Tennessee hills. But, it's still convenient to everything. This is going to be a great place to run, relax, and reconnect.
